A Brief History and Explanation of our Treasure Vases

The Guru Rinpoche Statue at Pema Osel Ling

Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, was a great saint who brought Buddhism to Tibet.

Guru Rinpoche prophesied that in future, human beings will excavate and harvest all the riches of the earth creating an imbalance of the elements that will cause turmoil, disease, elemental disasters, strife, famine, and other unwanted circumstances.

That future is now.

Guru Rinpoche’s remedy is the treasure vase, his gift to us to restore harmony and prosperity to our realm.

The making and consecrating of the vase is complex and requires over 137 ingredients.  Among them are jewels, prayer scrolls, and many rare substances.

Jigdral Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche

Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche was appointed the first supreme head of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism by the fourteenth Dalai Lama.

Rinpoche was a great scholar and Dzogchen master revered by all the five Tibetan lineages.  Through his connection with Guru Rinpoche, Dudjom Rinpoche wrote the Khandro Norlha practice and knew how to create the treasure vases as Guru Rinpoche instructed.

In addition to his prolific writings and teaching, he spent 30 years collecting all the rare and precious ingredients contained now in our mother pills.

He insured the completion of the arduous work of fulfilling Guru Rinpoche's wish that these vases be available during these tumultuous times by entrusting all the ingredients to his disciple, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche.

Lama Tharchin Rinpoche
Lama Tharchin Rinpoche, founding Lama of Pema Osel Ling and the Vajrayana Foundation in Santa Cruz, California, created the Treasure Vase Project.  He took all the rare and precious ingredients from Dudjom Rinpoche, added all the other necessary ingredients to complete the contents of the vase, and created the outside of the vase according to the specifications of Guru Rinpoche.

The making of these vases and the collecting all the remaining ingredients took over 7 years and was a painstaking and intensive process.
Examples of the unique and powerful items in our authentic vases:
  • Rocks and elements collected by teams of senior students sent out by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche to different power spots in the United States.
  • A large, precious ruby smashed by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche to the amazement of all there.  Rinpoche frequently added precious jewels such as diamonds and sapphires as they were offered to him to the vases.
  • Mantra scrolls containing a million mantras hand rolled while mantra is said.
  • A long life pill made by Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche specifically for our vases.
  • Water from a sacred spring in Bhutan that is known for it's healing powers.
Lama Tharchin said this about our Treasure Vases:
"There is so much suffering due to the current imbalance between inner and outer elements, and I think many people do not understand the connection between inner and outer. The inner elements in our body (flesh, blood, heat, breath and wind) are really the same as the outer elements. Flesh is earth, blood is water, heat is fire, breath is air, and mind is space or the sky. Also, all the elements exist in three realms of existence.  Above the earth are the gods, under the earth the nagas, and on the earth the humans. These three realms manifest exactly the same inner and outer elements. When there is happiness or suffering in any of these realms, it affects the other two, and especially the human realm!  Without a true belief in inter-connectedness, there is no respect. With our narrow minds we each make pollution in different ways, both physical and mental, that damages the outer and inner elements in all realms. Earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, and fires come from the same imbalances that also cause poverty in the human realm. It works both ways. For example, when the naga water element is healed, then rain and wealth come to the human realm. What causes wealth is positive actions and virtue — physical, mental, verbal. Wealth is due to causes and conditions that are based on merit. Lack of generosity decreases merit and causes poverty. Generosity increases merit and causes wealth. With a Lama Orgyen Khandro Norlha empowerment and consecration, we are creating positive karma for all of those connected with these treasure vases. (…) Treasure vases balance and heal the outer environment. In degenerate times, beings suffer from three types of suffering: sickness and disease, poverty and starvation, and weapons and war. Guru Rinpoche gave us these profound instructions and details on healing each realm, particularly the human and naga realm. Each realm has a different life essence and the treasure vases contains each substance — crystal for the god realm, turquoise for the human realm, and conch for the naga realm. Each vase contains yantras, mantras and inconceivable treasure substances from realized beings; from Guru Rinpoche and other lamas of the past up to lamas of the present time, like Thinley Norbu Rinpoche. Each vase contains 'mother essence' medicine pills made with herbs and other blessed substances from Dudjom Rinpoche and other realized lamas. Also, these vases are extra special as the mother essence contains water from the very stream that Thinley Norbu Rinpoche opened with his own hand in Bhutan! There, people travel many miles to drink from and bathe in this stream and they are healed! Every place you put one of these vases, whether buried in the land or placed in the water, a lake or ocean, it will heal the outer elements. If you place one on your shrine or in any clean, beautiful spot, it will also balance the elements, especially those that affect inner and outer wealth. A treasure vase is truly a holy object."

Lama Sonam Rinpoche
Lama Sonam Rinpoche now heads the Treasure Vase project.  He has found a special source for our vases from a family of artisans who have access to a very fine porcelain clay body that create the highest quality vase to fill with our precious ingredients.
He oversees the making of the vases as well as presides over the consecration of the vases.  We are deeply grateful for his guidance and skill in furthering and expanding the project so we can fulfill the wishes of our spiritual teachers in sharing the vases with the world.
Typically, treasure vases fall into two categories: yang bum and ter bum.  Our vases fall into both categories; they are an all-in-one vase.  Guru Rinpoche created the vase to cover all activities in all circumstances.  They can be buried in the earth and all types of bodies of water to heal the elements as well as placed in homes and business or on shrines. All environmental disturbances are quelled by the treasure vase.

The power of the vase on it's environment rebalances and replenishes the elements, increases prosperity and good fortune, and dispels all negativity.

Traditionally, vases were given by Masters to their heart students and also to commemorate special occasions such as weddings, births, and new ventures.

They are the perfect protection against anything negative and the most powerful magnetizer of positivity.

Mipham Rinpoche's Commentary on the Treasure Vases

by Lama Sonam Rinpoche

This treasure vase is described in the Khandro Thuk Thik yabka (male or daka) and the yumka (female or dakini) cycles. From these cycles comes the Tsok Kyi Thuk Tik which contains the four cycles of outer, inner, and secret practice.

The inner practice is Orgyan Khandro Norlha so sentient beings can have a confident source to rely on in times of war, famine, violence, and starvation. The vase has a special power to prevent negativity and obstacles, however and wherever they arise.

All the wealth and positive power of Guru Rinpoche flow through the vase to help manifest all manner of wealth and positive power in this human realm.

The power of Khandro Norlha clears away any negative forces through its energy and brings in all the positive qualities of Guru Rinpoche as Khandro Norlha.

This vase has a special way to bring auspiciousness to the world, cities, households, and individuals. It prevents disease, bad spirits, and mamos.

It clears away bad omens and curses and even clears the negative effects from not just this life but from our previous lives as well.

Disease and obstacles are dispensed with in a special way through the vase.

Of course, the wealth deity contained inside the vase cleanses chakras  and the other sacred substances are so special we can’t find them normally. The ingredients are so rare and must be sought out by a master.

The mother pills made from these special substances are like a yeast. The energy and power continues to multiply over the years. The power of the Triple Gems, the 3 Roots, all higher qualities, health, vigor, energy that magnetizes and increases positivity, beneficial positive wisdom mind, supreme intelligence are all emanating from the vase.

Addictions, unwanted circumstances, falling prey to negativity and demonic forces are all prevented by the power of the vase. Invoking happiness, health, and noble energy while also bestowing long life, health, wealth, and a dignified life are also benefits the vase brings to any environment.

Rigpa Wiki selected our treasure vase be used as the example of Treasure Vases along with the above quote from Lama Tharchin Rinpoche to explain the precious quality of  a Treasure Vase.
